D Gukesh Edges Closer to Norway Chess 2025 Title with Win Over Wei Yi, Trails Carlsen by Half a Point

World Chess Champion D Gukesh continues his impressive run at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, securing a crucial win over China’s Wei Yi to climb to second place on the leaderboard with 14.5 points—just half a point behind defending champion Magnus Carlsen.

 D Gukesh

Playing with the white pieces, the 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster capitalized on a missed Bishop tactic by Wei Yi, forcing the Chinese GM to resign. This marked Gukesh’s third classical win in the tournament, following earlier victories over fellow Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi and World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

With this win, Gukesh has firmly reasserted himself as a top contender for the Norway Chess title. After a brief dip in form, the reigning World Champion has bounced back with momentum, showcasing his class in the penultimate round of this intense six-player double round-robin event.

The battle for the top spot remains intense. Carlsen currently leads with 15 points after a narrow victory over American GM Fabiano Caruana, who suffered a critical blunder in their match. Gukesh, just behind, now sets his sights on closing the gap.

In the next round, Gukesh will face Caruana in what promises to be a high-stakes showdown. Meanwhile, Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi is set to take on Carlsen in another headline clash. With a massive $69,000 prize pool and national pride on the line, both Indian players are poised to challenge the world’s elite in one of the most prestigious chess tournaments of the year.
