The Forgotten Letter: Einstein’s Ultimate Theory Was Love
In the late 1980s, Lieserl — the daughter of the legendary physicist — donated 1,400 of Albert Einstein’s personal letters to the Hebrew University, with one condition: their contents were not to be made public until two decades after his death.
Among these letters was a profoundly moving message Einstein wrote to Lieserl. It reveals not a scientific formula, but a heartfelt revelation — one that transcends physics, equations, and even time itself.
“…When I proposed the theory of relativity, very few understood it. What I’m about to share now will face even greater misunderstanding and prejudice.
I ask you to guard these letters for as long as necessary — years, even decades — until society is advanced enough to embrace what I’m about to explain.
There is a force in the universe that is immensely powerful, yet science has never been able to formally identify it. It is a force that includes and governs all others — a force that lies behind every phenomenon in the universe, yet remains unseen.
That universal force is Love.
When scientists searched for a unified theory of the universe, they forgot the most powerful unseen force.
Love is Light, illuminating those who give and receive it.
Love is Gravity, drawing people together.
Love is Power, for it multiplies the best we have and allows humanity not to perish in its blind self-centeredness.
Love unfolds and reveals.
It is for Love that we live and die.
Love is God, and God is Love. This force explains everything, giving meaning to life. It is the missing variable we have ignored too long — perhaps because we fear it. Love is the only energy in the universe that man has not yet learned to control.
To make love more visible, I made a simple substitution in my most famous equation.
If instead of E = mc², we accept that the energy to heal the world is Love multiplied by the speed of light squared, then we arrive at the truth:
Love is the most powerful force, because it has no limits. After humanity’s failure to manage the other forces of the universe — forces that now turn against us — it has become urgent to nourish ourselves with a different kind of energy…
If we are to survive as a species, if we are to find meaning in life, if we are to save this planet and every living being on it, then Love is the only answer.
Perhaps we are not yet ready to build a Love Bomb, a device powerful enough to destroy all hatred, selfishness, and greed that plague the planet.
But every individual carries within them a small, powerful generator of Love, and its energy is waiting to be released.
When we learn to give and receive this universal energy, my dear Lieserl, we will affirm that Love conquers all, transcends everything, and is the true essence of life.
I am deeply sorry I couldn’t express all this before — my heart has silently ached for you my entire life.
Maybe it’s too late to apologize, but because time is relative, I still need to say:I love you.
And it is because of you that I have discovered the ultimate answer.
Your father,
Albert Einstein”
Whether or not this letter is authentic remains a topic of debate — but the message it carries is timeless. A reminder that in the vast cosmos of knowledge, the most powerful equation is still written in the language of the heart.
