The Rise of the Philippines’ Multimedia Idol

Kimberly Sue Yap Chiu (born April 19, 1990), widely known as Kim Chiu, is a celebrated Filipino actress and singer who has made a lasting impact on both film and television. She first gained nationwide attention after winning the inaugural teen edition of Pinoy Big Brother, which launched her into stardom.

Over the years, Chiu has become one of the Philippines’ most bankable stars, with her films earning a combined box office gross of over ₱1.36 billion. This feat has cemented her status as one of the highest-grossing actresses in local cinema. In 2020, Forbes Asia recognized her as one of the most influential Filipino personalities in the Asia-Pacific region.

 

Dubbed the "Multimedia Idol" by various media outlets, Chiu began her career with supporting roles on TV. Her breakthrough came through her popular on-screen partnership with Gerald Anderson, starring in successful projects like Sana Maulit Muli (2007), I've Fallen for You (2007), and Tayong Dalawa (2009). Her star power continued to rise as she took on a mix of dramatic and comedic roles. In 2010, she topped YES! Magazine’s list of the 100 Most Beautiful Stars.

Her film credits include hits such as The Healing (2012), Bride for Rent (2014), Etiquette for Mistresses (2015), and One Great Love (2018). On television, she starred in fan-favorites like Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin (2011), My Binondo Girl (2011), Ina, Kapatid, Anak (2012), Ikaw Lamang (2014), Love Thy Woman (2020), Linlang (2023), and the Philippine adaptation of What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim (2024).

Kim Chiu's talent has earned her numerous awards, including a Seoul International Drama Award, a FAMAS Award, eight PMPC Star Awards for Television, and eleven Box Office Entertainment Awards. As a singer, her studio albums have all achieved Gold or higher certifications from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry.

In 2015, Disney Southeast Asia selected her to portray Mulan for a special calendar shoot. She was also honored with a star on the Eastwood City Walk of Fame in 2010 for her contributions to the entertainment industry.

Currently, Kim Chiu is one of the main hosts of the popular noontime show It’s Showtime and has been a regular performer on ASAP since 2006, continuing to enchant audiences with her versatility and star power.
