THE TWO LINEMEN

This powerful photograph captures two electrical linemen, Randall Champion and J.D. Thompson, perched atop a utility pole during a routine maintenance job. What began as a normal workday turned into a life-or-death moment when Champion accidentally made contact with a high-voltage line—over 4,000 volts surged through his body, stopping his heart instantly. (To put that in perspective, an electric chair typically uses only about 2,000 volts.)

By sheer luck and safety protocol, Champion’s body didn’t fall—his harness held him in place. Just below him was Thompson, who acted without hesitation. Climbing up quickly, he reached Champion and began administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation right there, midair on the pole. Chest compressions were impossible in that position, so Thompson focused solely on breathing life back into his colleague. He continued until he felt a faint heartbeat return.

With incredible strength and calm under pressure, Thompson loosened Champion’s harness, secured him over his shoulder, and carefully descended the pole. Once on the ground, he and other linemen continued CPR until emergency services arrived. By the time paramedics reached the scene, Champion was regaining consciousness—and later went on to make a full recovery.

This image remains a timeless testament to courage, quick thinking, and the profound bond between those who put their lives on the line—literally—for their work and each other.
